Mathew’s Chippy

As I set out on this glorious bank holiday weekend in North East Lincolnshire, Grimsby, my excitement builds to visit Matthews Chippy, known far and wide as the cheapest fish and chip shop in the UK.  I can’t help but feel a tingle of disbelief at the thought of enjoying a meal for just £3. Mr. Mathews, the owner, has crafted this little gem into a non-profit venture by smoking his own haddock and sourcing fish directly. His dedication to the community is as impressive as the prices!

Upon entering. I place my order: a classic fish and chips with peas for three pounds, a large sausage for £1.30, a spam fritter for £1, onion rings for £1, and curry sauce for just 80 pence. I can’t believe the incredible value, especially when I think about the exorbitant prices I’ve seen at places like Harrods. As I wait for my meal to be cooked, I’m already dreaming of the scenic spot I’ll find to dig into this treasure.

Finally, I receive my order, and the sight of my food fills me with joy. The fish and chips are served hot, with a generous portion of crispy chips, a decent sized haddock, and vibrant mushy peas. The chips, while slightly soft from the box, are still tasty. The mushy peas have a wonderful flavour and warmth, adding a lovely touch to the meal.

The haddock impressed me with its crispy batter and and meaty portions, each flake of fish melting in my mouth. I also can’t resist trying the onion rings and battered sausage, both of which delight me with their crunchiness and affordability. The spam fritter, while a tad greasy, brings back fond memories and adds a nostalgic touch to my meal.

As I reflect on this experience, I am astounded by the overall value. The politeness of the staff enhances the experience, making me feel truly welcomed. The total cost of my feast comes to just eight pounds, an absolute steal! I can’t help but applaud Mr. and Mrs. Mathews for their unwavering commitment to the community; their efforts deserve all the recognition they can get.

In conclusion, I rate the fish and chips a solid 7.5/10 for quality, but the value is undeniably a perfect 10*. For their community service, I give the owners the same high marks.  As I make my way back home, I carry with me not just a satisfied belly but also a deep admiration for the work done at Matthews Chippy. £3…£3!

DISCLAIMER: I incorrectly mentioned that the haddock was smoked, this was a mix-up with the owners of the chippy and can confirm the haddock is not smoked. It is also fried in beef dripping.
