Thompson’s Fish and Chips

Have I Found The UK'S BEST FISH AND CHIPS?

When I first heard about Thompson’s Famous Fish and Chip Shop, I knew I had to pay a visit. Nestled about five miles outside York, this establishment has garnered rave reviews on TripAdvisor and is considered a top spot for fish and chips in Yorkshire. With two other notable contenders, Murgatroyds and Trenchers, I was curious if Thompson’s could truly live up to its reputation – having been in business for around 25 years, this shop, run by John Thompson, holds the coveted number one spot on TripAdvisor.

As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the modern and clean interior. I decided on haddock and chips, scampi, a Yorkshire fish cake, and peas with curry sauce. Although I was tempted by the home-made pies, I wanted to focus on what I believed would be a fantastic meal. The shop was bustling, with a large coach party filling the place, which highlighted the popularity of Thompsons.

Once my order was ready, I returned to my table, eager to dive in but slightly concerned about the portion sizes. As I took my first bite of the haddock, I was met with a beautifully crispy, golden batter enveloping the flaky fish. Each mouthful was delightful, and I could taste the care that went into preparing it. The scampi was another highlight, featuring a crispy exterior that gave way to a moist and perfectly seasoned inside.

The Yorkshire fish cake was unlike anything I had tried before. Its unique layered structure and incredible flavour left me in awe; it truly was the best fish cake I had ever tasted. The mushy peas were pleasant, even if a few were a tad hard, and the curry sauce’s consistency was spot on, adding a wonderful kick to the meal. Am I now an honorary Yorkshireman?

As I continued my feast, I appreciated the fluffy chips, perfectly crispy on the outside, although I wished they were a touch more golden. Reflecting on my meal, I found myself overly critical of the haddock portion at first, but the quality of the food outweighed my concerns.

In my final thoughts, I realised that Thompson’s is not just another fish and chip shop; it truly stands out. With its exceptional batter, flavourful curry sauce, and unmatched Yorkshire fish cake, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The total cost for my meal was £21.20, which I felt was incredibly reasonable given the quality of the food. My experience at Thompson’s has solidified its place in my heart, and I encourage you to try it for yourself. You’ll understand why I rate it a perfect 10 out of 10!

WOW! Top marks 10/10!
