Leo Burdock

Reviewing IRELAND'S OLDEST FISH AND CHIP SHOP!

When I found myself wandering the bustling streets of Dublin, I knew I had to visit Leo Burdock, touted as the oldest fish and chip shop in Ireland, having opened its doors back in 1913. The shop has a rich history, attracting numerous celebrities over the years, which only added to my anticipation. However, upon arriving, I quickly realised that securing a seat could be a challenge due to the shop’s popularity and its proximity to the main part of Dublin.

As I settled down and unwrapped my meal, I couldn’t help but admire the chunky cod, which looked promising. Unfortunately, my excitement was dampened by the soggy and doughy batter that coated the fish. It was disheartening, as the cod itself had a delightful flavour, but the lack of crispness left much to be desired. The chips, too, fell short; they appeared undercooked and lacked the golden colour that you expect from a classic fish and chips dish. This was a significant let-down, considering the shop’s storied reputation.

On a brighter note, the scampi was a revelation. Unlike the frozen options I’ve encountered elsewhere (not naming any names Rick), Leo Burdock’s scampi was fresh and expertly cooked, encased in a light tempura-style batter and I couldn’t help but smile as I savoured each bite, feeling grateful for this little gem amidst the disappointment of the cod. I think it was more relief than anything!

I also tried the curry sauce, which surprised me with its fruity notes and gentle spice. It complemented the meal beautifully and added a unique twist to the overall experience. However, I found myself yearning for the traditional mushy peas, which were notably absent, leaving a gap in the classic fish and chips experience.

Reflecting on my visit, I rated my overall experience a modest five out of ten. While the scampi deserves a solid nine for its quality and freshness, the cod and chips simply did not live up to the expectations set by such a historic establishment. Leo Burdock is certainly a piece of Dublin’s culinary history, and I encourage you to visit, but be prepared for a mixed bag of experiences. If you’re in search of a fantastic fish and chips meal, I hope you’ll find something better than what I encountered.

I rated it 5/10
