Air Raid Shelter Cafe and Tea Room
Reviewing an AIR RAID SHELTER CAFE!
The Air Raid Shelter Cafe and Tea Room in High Wycombe, A World War II enthusiasts paradise —a treasure trove of memorabilia that transports you back in time. As I stepped through the door, I noticed the various signs and artifacts that tell the story of a different era, including a map, a sign for scrap for Spitfires, and a quaint bus stop sign. It was clear that this place is not just a cafe but a celebration of history.
As I explored the different dining areas, I was amazed by the thoughtful design and clever decorations that enhance the relaxed atmosphere. Each section of the cafe has its own theme, from a quaint railway station to a village hall, all adorned with photos of actual soldiers that add a personal touch. I even stumbled upon a royal area featuring a charming Corgi, which brought a smile to my face.
The extensive memorabilia and the effort put into creating a warm, inviting space truly impressed me. The cafe also offers a wide array of menu options, ensuring there’s something for everyone. I decided to treat myself to Tommy’s all-day breakfast (£14.95), ham, egg, and chips (small £7.95), and a delightful clotted cream tea (£6.15). The presentation of the breakfast was stunning, served on a platter that included crispy bacon, succulent sausages, perfectly cooked hash browns, and juicy vine tomatoes. Each bite was a burst of flavour, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the separate serving of beans that complemented the meal beautifully.
Next, I turned my attention to the ham, egg, and chips. The home-made chips were perfectly golden, and the ham was tender and flavourful, enhanced by a touch of English mustard. I loved how the salad was thoughtfully presented, adding a pop of colour to the plate. Although the ham, egg, and chips were nice, I found myself longing for the heartiness of the breakfast, which left a lasting impression on me.
Overall, I rated Tommy’s breakfast a solid nine out of ten, with the ham, egg, and chips receiving a seven. The service and the dedication of the owners shone through and it was heartening to witness the love and passion that went into creating such a unique experience. From the ticket office to the cosy World War II era houses. Just brilliant.
I cannot stress enough the importance of supporting local businesses like the Air Raid Shelter Cafe. The atmosphere, coupled with the delicious food, makes for a memorable visit. I highly encourage you to experience it for yourself and relish the sense of history and community that fills the air. If you like your history and you like good honest food – you must give it a go!
The cameraman was desperate to go here. I’m very glad we did. 9/10.
