Golden Chippy
I Review GOLDEN FISH & CHIPS
I recently had the chance head down to the Golden Chippy in Greenwich, a highly-rated fish and chip shop in London. It’s a local favourite that’s known for its exceptional reviews, so I was eager to try it. The welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff set the stage, but it’s the food that stole the spotlight.
I ordered rock for the first time on the channel, which is a sweet and dense fish, accompanied by chips, mushy peas, scampi, and a Mediterranean salad – controversial but happy to have it. The twist of having a Mediterranean salad alongside such a classic British dish was intriguing and added a refreshing touch. But the real highlight of the meal was the batter. Crisp and golden without any hint of greasiness, it was clear that the fish had been properly rested after frying. It wasn’t swimming in oil, which made every bite enjoyable. The batter had a satisfying crunch, perfectly complementing the delicate texture and meatiness of the fish inside.
The fish itself was outstanding. Fresh, sweet, and cooked to perfection, it had a firm but tender texture. The scampi was equally impressive, encased in golden breadcrumbs that gave it a delightful crunch. It wasn’t overdone or dry, which is always a risk with scampi.
Let’s not forget the classic sides. The mushy peas were creamy and slightly sweet, the perfect partner to the fish. They were balanced and flavourful without overpowering the rest of the meal. The chips were well-cooked too, crisp on the outside with a fluffy interior, a sign of careful preparation.
One of the more unique aspects of this meal was the Mediterranean salad. Light and zesty, it brought a refreshing contrast to the richness of the fish and chips. I didn’t expect it to fit so well, but it provided a nice balance to the meal.
To top it all off, I ended the feast with a banana fritter. Sweet and satisfying, it was a delicious finish to an already impressive meal. It’s not on the menu but they do have it available. The pricing was reasonable for the quality: £15.50 for the rock with chips and salad, £15.50 for the scampi, and £2.50 each for the curry sauce and mushy peas.
For anyone seeking the best fish and chips in London, The Golden Chippy is well worth a visit. As per usual though, Yorkshire still remains the place to beat for excellent fish and chips.
I LOVED it! 8.5/10
