Rules
Reviewing the OLDEST RESTAURANT IN LONDON!
When I walked into Rules, London’s oldest restaurant, established in 1798, I felt a rush of excitement. The moment you step through the door, you’re embraced by a sense of history that’s palpable. It’s hard to believe this restaurant has been owned by just four families since its inception, with Thomas Rule being the first. It’s fascinating to know that famous films like Spectre and Downton Abbey have graced this very establishment. The atmosphere is quintessentially English, with elegant decor and attentive staff making you feel truly special.
The menu is extensive and inviting, filled with delicious options that had me spoilt for choice. From house cocktails to starters like oysters and duck shrimps, everything sounded tempting. However, I had my heart set on their renowned steak and kidney pie. I couldn’t resist pairing it with dauphinoise potatoes and purple sprouting broccoli drizzled in tapenade butter. It’s worth noting that while the wine selection is impressive, it comes at a steep price.
When my steak and kidney pie finally arrived, I was captivated by the aroma and presentation. The wait had been about 30 minutes, but it was clear that this pie was made with care. It was substantial, filled with 28-day aged beef, and the gravy was rich and flavourful. I even discovered a mushroom inside, which I usually avoid, but curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to give it a try. The taste was exceptional, blending perfectly with the beef and kidney.
The dauphinoise potatoes were simply divine—rich in flavour and perfectly seasoned. The purple sprouting broccoli added a fresh touch that complemented the dish beautifully. I loved how everything worked together, showcasing the quality of the ingredients used.
For dessert, I opted for the apple and rhubarb crumble with custard. When it arrived, the presentation was delightful, and the aroma was irresistible. The crumble was sweet and utterly delicious, enhanced perfectly by the custard. I had planned to share it, but I quickly realised I wanted to keep this treat all to myself!
Now, let’s talk about the total cost of my meal, which came to £50.50, including a 12% service charge. While it might seem a bit steep, I justified it as part of the memorable experience that Rules offers. I wholeheartedly give the steak and kidney pie a perfect 10 out of 10, and the food overall deserves a commendable 9.5 out of 10. I recommend this restaurant for special occasions, as it offers an experience unlike any other. I left with a full belly and a heart warmed by the rich history and culinary delights of Rules, and I’m already eager to return for another unforgettable meal.
I LOVED it! 9.5/10
