The Percy Arms
Reviewing a FOUR STAR HOTEL AND PUB!
When I visited the Percy Arms in Chilworth, Surrey, I found a charming four-star hotel and pub that offered a delightful South African twist. Nestled in a picturesque setting, the establishment is wheelchair accessible and provides ample parking, making it an inviting spot even on a busy bank holiday. The atmosphere struck a perfect balance between casual and elegant, with a large beer garden that beckoned for sunny days.
As I glanced over the menu, my excitement grew. The selection included a variety of starters, sandwiches, grills, and mains, with an enticing focus on South African flavours. I opted for the beef Scotch egg to start and a 10-ounce ribeye steak, cooked medium rare, paired with chunky chips and two intriguing sauces: peppercorn and monkey gland sauce.
The beef Scotch egg arrived, its golden exterior promising deliciousness. While it boasted an intense beef flavour that was simply divine, I found it lacked the visual charm of a traditional Scotch egg. Adding pickles and capers elevated the experience, balancing the robust flavour beautifully.
When my ribeye steak arrived, I couldn’t help but admire its presentation. The steak was tender and juicy, with a barbecue Monkey Glaze that took the flavours to new heights. Monkey Glaze is a sauce that originates from South Africa. However, I must mention that the portion size of the chips felt somewhat lacking; I was left wishing for more to complement the steak.
The combination of sauces on my plate added a layer of excitement to the meal. While the peppercorn sauce had its merits, I found myself gravitating towards the monkey gland sauce. It was thick, tangy, and offered a delightful kick that paired wonderfully with the rich flavours of the steak. However, I did notice that the sweetness of the barbecue glaze clashed slightly with the peppercorn sauce, making me appreciate the monkey gland sauce even more.
In conclusion, my dining experience at the Percy Arms was mostly a positive one. The steak was undoubtedly the highlight, showcasing exceptional quality and flavour. Though the portion of chips disappointed, the ambience and the South African theme brought a refreshing vibe to the meal.
Overall, I’m going to give it a 7/10.
I rated it 7/10
