Meat The Greek

Reviewing a TOP RATED GREEK RESTAURANT!

Today I decided to visit a highly rated Greek restaurant in Guildford known as “Meat the Greek” that has been turning heads this year, winning several awards, including the title of best restaurant in Guildford for 2023. As I stepped inside, I couldn’t help but recall my previous experience at a Greek restaurant called Andy’s in Camden, which I had rated a perfect 10 stars. However, this new place had its own charm.

One noticeable aspect was the absence of paper menus. Instead, I had to scan a QR code to view the menu, which felt a bit impersonal. I personally prefer the tactile experience of a traditional menu, but I was eager to see what delicious offerings awaited me. I decided to order a pot of chilli sauce (£2), a Greek salad (£7.50), chicken souvlaki (£15), and a mixed souvlaki (£15).

As the dishes arrived, I couldn’t help but admire the presentation. The chicken souvlaki looked slightly dry at first glance, but when I took a bite, I was pleasantly surprised by its moistness and rich flavour. The marinade delivered a punch that was bold yet not overpowering, making it an enjoyable experience. I loved combining the chicken with pitta bread, fresh onions, tomatoes, and a drizzle of mustard mayo, enhancing the overall flavour profile. It was a lovely touch, especially on a sunny day.

Moving on to the mixed souvlaki, I started with the pork skewer. While it had a delightful charcoal flavour, I found it slightly overdone. The chicken cubes in this dish, unfortunately, were a bit dry and lacked the flavour I was hoping for. It was disappointing, as both the pork and chicken could have benefited from a bit more attention in the kitchen.

Next, the Greek salad, which was the highlight of the meal. The freshness of the ingredients was exceptional, with the creamy feta cheese, briny olives, and fragrant oregano dancing together in perfect harmony. The quick service throughout my visit was commendable, with dishes arriving in a timely manner, allowing me to enjoy the meal without delay. The only problem… the salad probably shouldn’t have been the star of the show.

For dessert, I couldn’t resist trying the Portokalopita, a traditional Greek sweet drizzled in orange syrup. It was rich and moist, boasting a delightful orange flavour, though it was quite sweet. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed its texture and flavour.

Overall, my experience at this Greek restaurant slightly underwhelming compared to the reviews online. The charming grounds of Guildford Castle nearby provided a picturesque backdrop, and the relaxed atmosphere made for a delightful outing. With the bill coming to just shy of £40, I felt it was a reasonable price for the experience. The cameraman rated the restaurant an 8/10, while I settled on a 7.5/10, primarily due to the slight disappointments with the mixed souvlaki. I invite you to visit and experience it for yourself, and I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Don’t forget to subscribe to the channel for more reviews!

I rated it 7.5/10
