The Bingley Arms

Reviewing the UK'S OLDEST PUB!

During my recent visit to the Bingley Arms, I was captivated by the charm and history of what is claimed to be the oldest pub in the UK, dating back to 953 AD. Nestled in Bardsley, just eight miles outside Leeds city centre, this pub is a gem that combines a rich heritage with a delightful dining experience. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a warm atmosphere that felt like stepping back in time, with a public bar entrance and a restaurant area that invited you to stay awhile.

The layout of the Bingley Arms was intriguing, featuring a patio area and stunning bar, though I did notice some ongoing construction work that reminded me of the pub’s constant evolution. The menu was a treasure trove of culinary delights, offering everything from king scallops to vegan options. I decided to treat myself and ordered the king scallops with onion puree and crispy pork belly, alongside a steak and ale pie with Yorkshire pudding, gravy, chips, and roasted carrots. For dessert, I simply couldn’t resist the millionaire’s brownie.

When the king scallops arrived, I was immediately taken by their beautiful presentation. The combination of creamy scallops with the crispy pork belly created a delightful balance of textures. Each bite was a testament to the chef’s skill, and I found myself relishing the vibrant colours and harmonious flavours on my plate.

Next came the steak and ale pie, a dish that truly stole the show. The pie was packed with tender beef and served with rich gravy that brought the whole meal together. The home-made chips and perfectly roasted carrots added a delightful touch. I appreciated the effort put into crafting such a quality meal, showcasing the best of local produce. It was evident that this wasn’t just pub food; it was a celebration of culinary excellence. I thought the Yorkshire pudding was a bit of an unnecessary inclusion, I know I’m in Yorkshire but I felt it was better without!

To top off my meal, the millionaire’s brownie was an indulgent delight. With its layers of chocolate, biscuit, and a soft chocolate base, each mouthful was a symphony of flavours. I savoured every bite, feeling as though I was experiencing a little piece of heaven on a plate.

Reflecting on my experience at the Bingley Arms, I couldn’t help but admire the family ownership and the attention to detail in every aspect of the pub. The combination of history, excellent service, and quality food made my visit unforgettable. The total cost for my meal came to £36.50, a small price to pay for such a pleasant dining experience.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Bingley Arms to anyone seeking a unique pub experience that marries history with great food. I left with a satisfied heart and a rating of nine out of ten, eagerly encouraging you to visit this charming establishment and create your own memories in this historic venue.

I LOVED it! 9/10
