El Gato Negro Tapas

During my recent visit to El Gato Negro, a Michelin Guide-featured Spanish restaurant in Manchester, I took the opportunity to dive into their lunch special: three tapas dishes for £20. This offer is a fantastic way to sample a variety of authentic Spanish flavours without breaking the bank.

For my meal, I opted for a well-rounded selection of tapas. The Catalan bread with ham immediately stood out. It’s a simple yet flavourful dish, where the bread is drizzled with olive oil, rubbed with tomato and garlic, and topped with rich Spanish ham. The result is a perfect balance of sweetness, crunch, and savoury goodness, making it a true Spanish classic.

Next, I indulged in La Peral blue cheese, which was creamy, tangy, and beautifully complemented by a drizzle of honey. The sweetness of the honey paired perfectly with the sharpness of the cheese, creating a delightful contrast of flavours.

Moving on to the salt cod croquettes, these were nothing short of sensational. Crispy on the outside with a creamy, flavourful filling, they offered a slight kick of spice that added depth to each bite. Accompanying them was tender calamari, fried to perfection and served with a rich, garlicky aioli. The calamari had a satisfying crunch without being chewy, a feature often missed in other versions. It was a standout dish, especially when paired with the creamy aioli.

The meatballs were another highlight, juicy and packed with flavour, served in a rich tomato sauce that was the perfect complement. I also enjoyed the crispy patatas bravas, drenched in a tangy tomato sauce. These were the kind of dish you can’t stop picking at once you start.

The quality of the food at El Gato Negro was remarkable, with generous portions that made the £20 offer feel like an absolute steal. Each dish was expertly prepared, and the variety of textures and flavours showcased the depth of Spanish cuisine. From the crispy calamari to the indulgent croquettes, every bite was a treat. If you’re looking for an exceptional tapas experience in Manchester, El Gato Negro is a place I highly recommend. An easy 9/10.
