Turtle Bay

Reviewing TURTLE BAY - A CARIBBEAN RESTAURANT!

Turtle Bay is a trendy chain, known for its vibrant Caribbean cuisine albeit not so authentic, promised an adventure for my taste buds, and I was ready to dive in. The restaurant’s atmosphere was inviting, with an open-plan kitchen and a lively bar at its heart. The colour scheme and decor added to the tropical vibe, and I couldn’t help but admire the option for al fresco dining, which made the place feel even more welcoming.

The menu was extensive, showcasing a variety of small plates, salads, burgers, and, of course, their famous jerk pit offerings. After careful consideration, I opted for the jerk platter, which boasted half a jerk chicken, half a rack of barbecue ribs, jerk sausage, coconut rice, spice fries, and slaw. I also decided to try the curry goat, a classic Caribbean dish marinated in aromatic spices. Although I noticed the two-for-one cocktail deal during happy hour, I chose to go with a refreshing mocktail since I was driving… Turtle Bay are very much known for their cocktails!

As I settled into the rhythm of the restaurant, I paid upfront, enjoying the pleasant tunes that filled the air without being overpowering. When the jerk platter arrived, my eyes widened at the generous portions. The half jerk chicken was particularly impressive, and I could already sense the kick of spices it promised. The special rub used on the chicken was delightful, while the jerk sausages, served with a rich gravy, were bursting with flavour. I imagined how perfect they would be for breakfast.

As I dug into the ribs, I was blown away by their tenderness. The dry rub and spicy gravy complemented the meat beautifully, while the slaw offered a refreshing balance to the heat. The spice fries were perfectly seasoned, and the coconut rice was a dream, with its subtle sweetness and the addition of kidney beans.

Moving on to the curry goat, the aroma alone was enough to excite my palate. The first piece of goat was slightly fatty, but the second was tender and packed with flavour. The rich spices and the hint of heat from the scotch bonnet peppers made this dish memorable. Although I’ve had curries that were more impressive, this one held its own and left me satisfied.

As I reviewed the meal prices, I found the jerk platter at £31 slightly steep, yet the quality of the food and the overall experience made it worthwhile. The service was friendly, and I appreciated the absence of a service charge, which added to my enjoyment. Ultimately, I walked away from Turtle Bay with a heart full of good vibes and a rating of 8 out of 10. If you’re looking for an enjoyable evening with good Caribbean food, Turtle Bay is a place I wholeheartedly recommend – especially for a cocktail! However, I do think there are better authentic choices out there.

I LOVED it! 8/10
