Govinda
The CHEAPEST INDIAN RESTAURANT I've Ever Seen!
Govinda offers an authentic taste of South Indian vegetarian cuisine right in the heart of London. I was excited to try it out, especially since it’s known for being one of the more affordable options in the city. Upon entering, the first thing that struck me was the enticing aroma of spices filling the air. The atmosphere is relaxed, and while I initially sat inside, I later moved outside when things got busier.
The menu features a variety of items, but I had to try the five-item vegetarian meal for just £7.95. The plate includes bean curry, rice, lentil soup, a green salad, and a choice between a bread roll or poppadum. For anyone looking for a hearty, flavourful lunch, this meal is substantial. The lentil soup, in particular, stood out for its creamy texture and bold flavours, packed with a surprising punch of spice. It’s a dish that captures the essence of what Govinda does best: bringing authentic, vibrant tastes to the table.
Feeling adventurous, I also opted for the Govinda extravaganza platter at £15.95, which offers twelve items. It’s perfect for sharing, with highlights including chilli paneer, vegetable curries, and pakora. Each dish on the platter was distinct, balancing heat, sweetness, and a variety of textures. The paneer, soft and well-seasoned, paired beautifully with the vegetable curries, creating a combination of flavours that’s hard to find elsewhere.
What sets Govinda apart isn’t just the food—it’s the incredible value for money. Both meals were reasonably priced, and there’s no service charge, which adds to the appeal. The lentil soup with rice was a standout, and I’d recommend it to anyone wanting a satisfying meal with depth of flavour.
In addition to the food, the service was friendly, and it was clear that the staff cared about creating a memorable dining experience. An interesting titbit is that no onion or garlic are used whilst cooking and the restaurant is non-profit.
An easy 10/10.
