Humble Pie
Reviewing WHITBY'S BEST RESTAURANT!
When I first stepped into the Humble Pie and Mash Shop in Whitby, I was immediately charmed by its traditional atmosphere. The shop takes you back in time, evoking the essence of the 1900s with wartime memorabilia. I had read many positive reviews online, and I was excited to see if the food lived up to the hype.
As I settled in, the warmth of the open fire and the rustic brick decor, complemented by some lovely background music, created an inviting setting that reminded me of a lovely video that I done at Poppylands.
The menu featured a wonderful selection of home-made pies, including chicken, mince, and steak and kidney. I decided to go for the recommended peppered steak and ale pie, accompanied by home-made mash, garden peas, and rich gravy. I also ordered a mug of camp coffee, which cost £2.95 and was ludicrously sweet. The menu had a tempting dessert section, but I was torn between the jam Roly Poly and bread and butter pudding. In the end, I opted for the jam Roly Poly, eager to indulge in something sweet after my main course.
As I took my first bites, I couldn’t help but feel the cosy atmosphere wrapping around me. I had the option to sit upstairs, which felt perfect for the summer months. The mash was creamy and perfectly seasoned, while the gravy added a delightful richness that elevated the entire dish. The pie was a masterpiece, boasting a fantastic balance of pepper and tender steak. It reminded me of the top-notch pie and mash shops in London, with a generous amount of gravy instead of liquor.
Each bite was pure comfort, and I was filled with nostalgia as I savoured the moist and juicy filling. The garden peas, while adequate, didn’t steal the show, but they complemented the meal nicely. A smile spread across my face as I reminisced about family dinners and the simple joys of hearty food.
For dessert, the jam Roly Poly was delightful, but the custard that came with it was a bit of a let-down. It was thin and lacked the creamy texture I had hoped for. However, the home-made quality of the dessert, with its sweet jam and dense suet pastry, made up for it in many ways.
Reflecting on my experience, I felt grateful for the excellent service and friendly staff. The pastry of the pie was beautifully golden, and the steak melted in my mouth. Despite my minor disappointment with the custard, I would rate the experience a remarkable 9.5 out of 10. I almost wanted to give it a perfect score, but the custard held me back just a touch.
As I settled the bill, which came to £21.00 in total, I couldn’t help but leave a tip for the excellent service. If you find yourself in Whitby, I wholeheartedly encourage you to visit the Humble Pie and Mash Shop. It’s a journey back in time filled with flavours that will leave you with a smile and a sense of warmth.
I LOVED it! 9.5/10
