Roti King
Reviewing LONDON'S CHEAPEST MALAYSIAN RESTAURANT!
I’ve returned to Roti King after 10 months after being disappointed with my first review and I immediately was reminded of why this place is often hailed as one of London’s best-kept secrets for affordable Malaysian cuisine. Tucked away under the railway arches, the restaurant buzzes with a vibrant energy, making it an inviting spot for both locals and curious foodies like you. After my previous experience didn’t quite hit the mark, I felt compelled to return and give it a proper review.
As I stepped inside, I couldn’t help but notice the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. Yes, the sounds of passing trains are a constant reminder of its location, but they seem to blend into the lively atmosphere. I took a moment to glance over the menu, which, although tight, is refreshingly simple. I decided to go with the roti canai with dhal (£8.95) and the beef rendang (£11.95), albeit with a twinge of surprise at the slight price increase since my last visit.
When the beef rendang arrived, the aroma was simply intoxicating. As I took my first bite, I was delighted by the rich gravy, which carried a nutty flavour and just the right amount of kick. The beef was noticeably more tender this time, and it paired beautifully with the fragrant coconut rice and crispy dried onions. You could taste the care that went into perfecting this dish, and I was impressed by how the flavours danced together.
Next, the roti canai made its entrance. This dish was a revelation. The flaky texture of the roti, complemented by the sweet and spicy notes from the lentils and tamarind, left me wanting more. As I savoured each bite, I appreciated the knowledgeable staff who happily explained the nuances of each dish, making the dining experience all the more enjoyable.
Then came the char kuey teow, featuring flat rice noodles, egg, chicken, and prawns. The combination of flavours and textures was a treat, with the crunch of the onions adding a delightful twist. It’s hard to believe such high-quality dishes can come at such reasonable prices, and I was grateful for the generous portion of prawns.
To round off my meal, I indulged in roti kaya, a dessert filled with Malaysian coconut jam. Its sweetness was heavenly, and the crispy texture made it a perfect ending to my culinary adventure. As I calculated the total cost of the meal—£42.02—I felt an overwhelming sense of satisfaction. For such quality and quantity, it was undoubtedly a bargain.
I wholeheartedly recommend Roti King for anyone seeking delicious Malaysian fare without breaking the bank. I’m already looking forward to my next visit, and I encourage you to experience this gem for yourself!
I LOVED it! 8.5/10
