The Covered Wagon

Is This The BEST CURRY in BIRMINGHAM?

When in Birmingham, it’s almost sacrilege to not go for a curry… well that’s what I tell myself anyway.

I took a trip to Moseley which is just outside the centre of Birmingham and headed to the Covered Wagon which has a reputation for being the best Desi pub in the entire country. I absolutely adore Indian style pubs, I wish I had a few closer to me as I’d be in one every night. However, I don’t think my liver or digestive system would thank me after a while.

The Covered Wagon was empty when I arrived at 2pm in the afternoon, I do tend to get a bit nervous when I don’t see any other patrons but it was during the week and the server informed me that I’d got in before the mad rush starts as they are full booked later in the evening. One half of the pub is more for drinking, the other half is a restaurant area with many sub sections. I feel right at home already.

So let’s begin, I ordered their Large sizzler (£19.95), Chicken biryani (£11.45), Sarson Ka Saag (£8.95) and a Chilli naan (£3.50).

As I was the only one in the restaurant, I could already hear the chefs working away and within 15 minutes, the feast had arrived. The drama of the sizzler already had my taste buds tingling but the aromas coming from the biryani and the Sarson Ka Saag were heavenly. The sizzler included two sizeable lamb chops which were effortless to eat, perfectly tender. Chicken tikka, Chicken wings and the Sheesh kebab were all perfectly acceptable, particularly the latter which I noticed a strong hint of spice. One thing I do love about a sizzler are the bed of caramelised onions which are infused with all of the juices from the meat. Wow. I’ve never had Sarson Ka Saag before and I cannot understand why, as it was spectacular. The fundamental flavours being the mustard leaves and of course, the strong taste of spinach. I’ve never seen a Chicken biryani packed with as much meat and rice as this particular one, full of flavour and comes with an incredibly addictive curry sauce. I have no idea why I ordered the Chilli naan, the only logical explanation would be that I’m a masochist who enjoys making a fool of themselves on camera.

The Covered Wagon is an excellent Desi pub, I’ve been to a few in Birmingham but this one takes the top step. Incredibly good value too.

Total cost of the meal: £43.85.

Star of the show: Sarson Ka Saag – an excellent dish. Highly recommend if you visit The Covered Wagon.

Should you give it a go? One of the easiest recommendations I’ve ever given. Give it a go!

WOW! Top marks 10/10!
