Makars Gourmet Mash Bar

Have I FOUND THE BEST RESTAURANT In SCOTLAND?

Visiting the Makars Gourmet Mash Bar in Edinburgh is an experience I won’t soon forget. This acclaimed restaurant has earned a reputation as the best in the UK, and I couldn’t wait to dive into their renowned dishes.

I was recommended the a slow-cooked lamb shank, beautifully infused with tomato, rosemary, and red wine sauce. The lamb was incredibly tender, effortlessly falling off the bone. The rich, aromatic gravy elevated the dish, with the rosemary standing out as the perfect complement to the lamb’s deep flavour. The blend of garlic, tomato, and a hint of mint rounded it off, creating a symphony of taste that left me speechless.

The dish was paired with mild smoked Applewood cheese mash, which added a creamy, indulgent texture that perfectly balanced the savoury richness of the lamb. The mashed potatoes weren’t just an accompaniment – they were a standout on their own, with a smoky depth that worked beautifully alongside the main course.

For my second course, I opted for the spatchcock chicken, marinated in wild garlic and served with whole grain mustard mash and a whiskey peppercorn sauce. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, with a marination that brought out the earthy, aromatic notes of wild garlic. The whiskey peppercorn sauce provided a delightful kick, with the mustard mash adding another layer of complexity. Every bite was full of depth and the perfect amount of seasoning.

The atmosphere at Makars is cosy and welcoming inside, with attentive staff offering great service. Though it was incredibly busy – a clear sign of the restaurant’s popularity – the experience felt intimate and relaxing. I chose to sit outside as it’s much easier to film and it was surprisingly mild in Scotland today!

The prices are reasonable given the exceptional quality of the food, with the lamb shank priced at £23 and the chicken at £18.50, including the mash. In my opinion, the meal was worth every penny.

After tasting these dishes, it’s easy to see why Makars is so highly regarded. The food is expertly crafted, with each dish showing a deep respect for flavour and quality. If you’re in Edinburgh, I highly recommend a visit – the food alone makes it worth the trip.

Easily one of the best restaurants I’ve visited since the start of the channel. It’s a 10 star!

WOW! Top marks 10/10!
