The Old House 1147
Reviewing WALES' OLDEST RESTAURANT!
The Old House 1147, the oldest pub restaurant in Wales is the one of the most picturesque places I’ve ever visited.
Nestled in Maesteg, this charming establishment is a beautifully thatched building that immediately captures your attention. As I approached, I couldn’t help but admire the stunning beer garden, which was impeccably maintained and offered breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. With the weather being just perfect, I decided to sit outside, immersing myself in the wonderful surroundings.
The lunch menu features a two-course offering for just £18.50, which is fantastic value, especially considering the exceptional quality of the food. After much deliberation, I opted for the Welsh roasted leg of lamb served with crushed Pembrokeshire potatoes, minted gravy, and tenderstem broccoli. I also added a side of sausage, leeks, and bacon for an additional £5—definitely worth it!
From the moment I stepped inside, I felt a warm and inviting atmosphere that made me think, “This is one of the most stunning pubs I’ve ever visited.” When our food arrived, I was immediately struck by the presentation. The dishes were served piping hot, and the lamb was cooked to perfection. The meat was incredibly tender, bursting with flavour that left me wanting more. The side dishes of leeks and bacon complemented the meal beautifully, with their crunchiness enhancing the overall experience.
As I took my first bite of the lamb, I couldn’t help but rave about its tenderness. The combination of vegetables, including sweet carrots and fresh peas, created a wonderful medley of flavours and textures. However, my favourite part was undoubtedly the leeks and bacon. The sweetness of the leeks paired with the salty bacon made for a delightful combination that I could have enjoyed all day.
To top off this incredible meal, I ordered the passion fruit and vanilla cheesecake with a biscuit base. The cheesecake was rich and creamy, yet perfectly balanced by the refreshing tang of passion fruit. It was the ideal way to end such a satisfying lunch.
As I gazed out at the gorgeous view one last time, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this experience. The bill was incredibly reasonable, and I appreciated the excellent service throughout our visit. I walked away from The Old House feeling genuinely satisfied, having enjoyed not only a delicious meal but also a memorable atmosphere.
I wholeheartedly recommend The Old House as a must-visit destination… the easiest 10 star I’ve ever given.
The only issue was the sunburn I received!
WOW! Top marks 10/10!
